SUNDAY OCTOBER 9, 1955

D. C. Zoo’s Bird Curator

To Make South Pole Trip

Malcom Davis.  The Washington’s Zoo's bird curator will return  to the Antarctic next month as ornithologist for Operation Deepfreeze, the Navy's new South Pole exploration.

The Smithsonian Institution is sending him with the expedition to capture and tend wildlife to be returned to this continent.

That cold country won't be    new to Mr. Davis. He went on the 1939 Navy expedition to Antarctica and returned with Emperor Penguins that lived here—under his care—longer than the big tuxedoed birds have survived in captivity any where else.

Mr. Davis made a number of trips for the Smithsonian, and on his own. In behalf of winged, furred and other creatures.

He may be the only ornithologist ever to have kept a bird under observation during an earthquake.  That was in India in 1950.

In 1941 he contracted psittacosis at the Zoo,  caring for birds infected with parrot fever. He has been aloft and at sea on a number off occasions in attempts to improve the Zoo's stock.  This may be his most successful,  especially insofar as regard the emperor penguins, biggest and rarest of the type.

The Navy is furnishing special quarters, with ultraviolet lighting to destroy air-born bacteria that kill the birds.
